You are now going to compare the food chains you have just completed in the Exercise By looking at the common elements in all of the food chains, you may be able to write a list that will help you to write food chains in the future.
Look again at the five food chains.


That is, what are the similarities? Here are some questions that will help you to answer.
Using the information from the food chains above to answer the following questions.
1 What kind of living thing is at the start of each food chain?
2 What is the next link in the food chain? That is, what kind of living thing is second in a food chain?
By comparing the food chains, you can see that all food chains begin with a plant. This shows us again that all animals depend on plants for food. Plants can make their own food but animals cannot.
