Herbivores

Silver beet and bamboo are both types of plants.   The elephant and the monkey in the photographs are both herbivores.   Other examples of herbivores include sheep, cows, rabbits, goats and horses.

Answer the following questions.

1      What sort of a diet does a herbivore have?

Herbivore comes from Latin.   Herba means grass.   So a herbivore eats grass or plants.   Another word for herbivore is vegetarian.

Omnivore, carnivore or herbivore?

In this lesson, you have classified plants as producers and animals as consumers.   Then you have classified the consumers (animals) according to what they eat, or what their diet is.   In this way, animals can be classified as omnivores, carnivores or herbivores.
