Response and reproduction

Two other characteristics of living things are responding to a stimulus and reproduction.

Responding to stimuli

A change in the environment is called a stimulus. If there is more than one stimulus, they are called stimuli.

Examples of stimuli include:

  • light
  • temperature
  • water
  • pressure
  • sound (noise)
  • odour (smell)
  • movement
  • pain
  • gravity
  • chemicals (such as an acid).

When a living thing detects a stimulus and reacts, we say it responds.   Responses vary a lot depending on the living thing. For example, humans blink when you shine light in their eyes and wheat grows towards light.

Let's look at some more examples of how living things respond to stimuli.
